What we believe

We are a Christian church that worships the Triune God who has revealed Himself and the Good News of salvation in the Bible, His Holy Word.

Summary

We believe that the divinely inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God, consisting of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is the ultimate standard for the Church’s doctrine and life.

We believe that God is Triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and yet one God. This is a mystery that we will never fully comprehend.

We believe that the man Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully God and fully man, another mystery. He came to reconcile us to God, bearing the punishment we deserve and living the perfect life that God’s holiness requires. Thus He died on the cross for the sins of His people and was raised from the dead. By believing and trusting in Jesus as our substitute we have peace with God.

We believe that God’s Holy Spirit dwells in His people, convicting us of our sin and enabling us to obey God. God calls His people to join together as the church, to worship Him, hear from His Word, and be renewed.

We believe that Jesus Christ will come again to judge the world and usher in a new heaven and earth, where righteousness will dwell.

We hold to the basic Christian faith laid out in the historic Nicene Creed.

Confessional and Reformed

Creeds are helpful for establishing the fundamentals of the Christian Faith, but we think it is beneficial to have a more substantial statement of faith.

As a congregation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), the officers (elders and deacons) of Trinity Presbyterian believe that the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms of the OPC contain the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures and serve as a faithful summary thereof.

These documents date back to the 1640s and have stood the test of time.

They are available on the OPC website, along with a some other resources:

Confession of Faith

Larger Catechism

Shorter Catechism

(A catechism is a teaching tool, organized as a series of questions and answers.)

Presbyterian

Being a presbyterian church means that we are governed by elders, connected with other churches, and have a formal book of order.

Trinity Presbyterian Church is governed by the session, made up of the minister and ruling elders elected by the congregation.

Our church is part of the OPC’s Presbytery of the Northwest, or what we call the regional church.  Ministers and ruling elders from OPC churches across the Pacific Northwest gather at least twice a year to pray for one another and deal with matters affecting the broader church.  Annually, representatives from each OPC presbytery gather for the General Assembly.

Being part of a denomination enables us to participate in and contribute to missions at home and abroad.

The methods and standards for church government, discipline, and worship are governed by the OPC Book of Church Order.
